An Interview with

How long have you been writing and how long did it take to get published?
I used to have this pat answer, which was I’ve been writing for ten years. Last year I did a radio spot and when asked the question realized that my oldest son was going to be 21, which means I’ve been writing for over 20 years!! It took me about 10 years to get published and that’s the real answer!

How do you name your characters?
I used my neighbors names for last names and when I’m stuck I look in the phone book. I look at naming my characters like I named my children when they were born. The names I pick are the ones that fit the personality. And if I was told by my editor to change the name that would be a hard thing for me to do. Luckily, I’ve never had to do this.

How did you start writing?
I had this idea for a historical romance novel way back in the late 1970s when romance was just starting to come of age. I sat down at a typewriter and began typing away. I still have the manuscript.

What’s the hardest part of writing?
The hardest part of writing for me is keeping my backside in the chair. I love to write, but sometimes the moment isn’t always right for me. I do try to write everyday. I’m a morning writer.

How do you develop your characters?
My characters usually live in my head for a very long time before I actually put them down on paper. I have a general idea of who they are before I start writing and then they seem to grow as they come to life in the story.

Are you working on anything else for Avalon?
I’ve just finished the third book in the Women Of Surprise historical romance series for Avalon.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Or for anyone wanting to submit to Avalon?
Ah aspiring writers, something we’ve all been at one time... I think the key to getting published is to keep at it. If you believe in your work and in yourself as a writer just keep submitting. But don’t submit the same manuscript over and over again. I sold my third completed novel after 10 years of writing. The first manuscript you complete is good practice, but may not ever see the other side of published. As for submitting to Avalon you need to know what they publish. When the guidelines say “sweet,” they mean it! Read the books that are available now by Avalon authors.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on a project which I’m very excited about! The manuscript is my first attempt at a single title contemporary romantic suspense. The book is of course set in the same area of upstate New York as my previous ones. Let’s just say there will be a lot of HEAT in this book!
