AN AVALON WESTERN
Bowie’s Silver
by Kent Conwell ISBN 978-0-8034-9700-8

Luck had never been much inclined to perch on Judd Cameron’s shoulder, so he wasn’t surprised when his life took on all the ups and downs of hanging tight in the saddle on the back of a bucking bronc.

All of a sudden he finds himself smack-dab in the middle of a bank robbery and hounded by a posse eager for a hanging. He manages an escape by taking his pony over a fifty-foot drop into the Colorado River, while keeping a sheriff from being scalped. Hired on as a deputy, Judd helps a young half-white, half-Indian woman with her younger brother and sister, is framed for payroll hijacking, and while trying to clear his name, discovers Bowie’s lost cache of thirty-three mule loads of silver... only to lose it again.

Kent Conwell grew up in the Texas Panhandle in the town of Wheeler, population 848. The West was an integral part of his life. The solitude of the Panhandle, which offered little more than school and work, encouraged his reading and writing as well as his exploration of the vast emptiness of the rolling prairies. A quest for adventure had been woven into his life by his grandfather, who had run away from his Tennessee home when he was fourteen. He had bullwhacked his way to the Panhandle where he met his future wife who had traveled from Illinois to Texas.

After moving to Fort Worth, where Kent was more at home at the stockyards than school, he earned a B.S. and began teaching. Later, he moved to Port Neches where he acquired an M.Ed. and Ph.D. As a successful educator, his love for writing about the West, a period in history unique to America, has never waned. After twenty-two westerns, he wrote his first mystery.

Kent has won awards for short stories, screenplays, mysteries, and westerns. Bowie’s Silver is Kent’s twenty-fourth western for AVALON. In addition, Kent has also written four mysteries for AVALON.
