In the waning days of the Civil War, Captain John Waverly and his special unit are ambushed by Confederate forces. They are taken to a makeshift prisoner of war camp, where they are tortured and brutalized by a sadistic lieutenant named Traxler. Left for dead, Waverly and his men are rescued by chance and taken to a Union hospital. Following months of medical treatment and rehabilitation, they must face new challenges in the civilian world. They agree to band together and travel to California to start new lives for themselves.
Fate, however, plays a hand, for Waverly and his companions encounter Traxler once again during a stopover in St. Joseph, Missouri. It is here where their final showdown plays itself out.
