Ever since Will Clay's wife and newborn son died in childbirth two winters ago, he has been riding--traveling not so much toward any place special as riding away from his past. Then, late one chilly, fall afternoon, after Clay saves a stray calf, he accepts a grateful rancher's hospitality and finds among the old man's family the sense of belonging he had lost. But when disaster strikes, Clay takes to the trail again--this time to see justice done as he travels a road toward personal redemption.
